Plug types

There are several types of plugs on the market for charging electric cars. The two most important plugs are those on the car side, Type 1 and Type 2. There are some exceptions, but the first type of plug is usually used by Japanese and American car brands. Type 2 Charging cables

The plugs from our charging cables (1 phase and 3 phase, 16A and 32A) have additional functionality to maintain safety while optimally charging your electric car. In addition to the connectors for the phase conductors, our plugs have two additional signal pins (a short pin ‘CP’ and a long pin ‘PP’).

If the plug is removed from the charging station or the car, the short CP signal pin will disconnect before the contacts of the charging current do. In this way, information is communicated to the charging station that the charging process can be stopped and the contacts are completely voltage  free before the plug is completely removed to avoid potential sparks. This prolongs the durability of the contacts and, as a result, the durability of the charging cable as a whole.

A Type 2 charging cable has 2 conductors (1 phase) or 4 conductors (3 phase).  In addition to the “N” conductor, you also find L1, L2 and L3. The Type 2 charging cable with 4 conductors can charge the car with a triple capacity (3 phase). In a phase 1 charging cable, the unused phase conductors L2 and L3 are sealed inside the plugs. The charging capacity is 3,7 kilowatt and 7,4 kilowatt respectively for 16A and 11 kilowatt and 22 kilowatt for 32A.

Type 1 charging cables

Type 1 charging cables are only available for 1 phase charging current, 16A and 32A. In Type 1 car plugs, a button controls the unlocking mechanism. This button is connected to a lever that releases the anchoring. Simultaneously, a micro switch is activated, transmitting a signal to the car. As a result, the signal pin changes in resistance value. The car will complete the charging process, enabling the contacts to become voltage free before the plug is removed from the charging station.

A Type 1 charging cable has two conductors, a neutral “N” and a phase conductor “L1”. The charging capacity is 3,7 kilowatt for 16A and 7,4 kilowatt for 32A, respectively.
